Nabtesco is a Japanese company established on September 29, 2003 and headquartered in Tokyo (Hirakawacho, Chiyoda-ku) that, according to Wikipedia, specializes in gearboxes, rotors, motors and robotics. Among other things, the company manufactures precision reduction (cycloidal) gears, railway brakes and platform screen doors; a 2010 acquisition of the door-automation division of Swiss group Dormakaba expanded its automatic-door business. Nabtesco is also active in aerospace, supplying flight-control components, and in hydraulic equipment.
Component and function
Central to robotics are Nabtesco's precision reduction gears of the RV series. According to the product pages of Nabtesco Precision Equipment (precision.nabtesco.com), these are "planocentric" cycloidal gear mechanisms with minimal backlash and low rotary vibration and inertia, enabling rapid acceleration, smooth motion and highly accurate positioning. Models such as the RV-E and RV-N are listed under the manufacturer's "RV Series" catalog, and according to a Nabtesco press release from December 2025, more than 14 million units of the RV line have been produced to date. These gears are preferred in the lower, powerful axes of large industrial robots, where high rigidity is required. In December 2025 Nabtesco announced two new compact companion series, "RVmini" and "Monocrank," which the company says cover lower torque ranges and specifically target collaborative and humanoid robots — segments with growing demand for lighter, more compact precision gears.

Nabtesco itself claims the world's largest market share in precision reduction gears with its RV series; alongside Harmonic Drive, it is considered one of the two leading suppliers of this component class for industrial robots. As a supplier, the company delivers a key component without building complete robots itself — its gears are found in robots from numerous manufacturers.
