Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are free, Gemini-powered answer features built directly into Google Search that generate AI summaries and conversational answers with links to supporting web content. They are built for the general public already using Google Search, requiring no subscription or sign-in in supported regions.
What it is
AI Overviews places an AI-generated summary above traditional search results for many queries, while AI Mode offers a fuller conversational search experience with follow-up questions. Both use a 'query fan-out' technique — issuing multiple related searches concurrently across subtopics and data sources and combining the results into one response — and can draw on fresh, real-time sources such as Google's Knowledge Graph, real-world information, and shopping data for billions of products.
How it answers and cites sources
Google surfaces the pages behind an AI Overview or AI Mode answer as clickable links, describing the feature as a way to get to the gist of a complex topic quickly while providing 'a jumping off point to explore links to learn more.' Google's own guidance to site owners states that to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must already be indexed and eligible to appear in regular Google Search with a snippet — so the same pages that can rank normally are the ones eligible to be cited.
Pricing and access
AI Overviews and AI Mode are free. Google has expanded access so that a subscription is no longer required, and sign-in is no longer needed to use the features in supported regions — Google's 2026 I/O update describes expanding related Personal Intelligence features in AI Mode to nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages, with no subscription required.
Privacy and data use
Google's privacy policy states that it uses interactions with AI models and technologies like Gemini to develop, train, fine-tune, and improve those models — so, unlike some competing answer engines, Google documents that your usage can feed back into model training. Google also states that it maintains servers around the world and that information may be processed on servers outside the country where you live, meaning there is no EU-only or GDPR-specific hosting guarantee documented for this feature; regulated or privacy-sensitive users should review Google's privacy policy directly.
Who it's for
Because it's built into ordinary Google Search rather than a separate app, AI Overviews and AI Mode fit anyone who already searches on Google and wants a quick synthesized answer with source links, from casual fact-checking to more complex research questions handled through AI Mode's follow-up conversation. Its free, sign-in-optional access and default model, Gemini 3.5 Flash — Google's newest Flash model, rolled out globally as the default in AI Mode — make it the lowest-friction of the major AI answer engines to simply start using, at the tradeoff of your data being eligible for model-training use by default.
